Minecraft Grindstone Guide: How to Craft, Repair and Disenchant

A grindstone is inexpensive enough for an early survival base but remains useful after you obtain enchanted equipment. It can turn two nearly broken tools into one usable item, clear unwanted enchantments before another enchanting attempt, return part of their experience value and serve as the job-site block for a weaponsmith villager.

That versatility also creates risk. A grindstone is not an anvil: it does not preserve ordinary enchantments when repairing gear. This guide explains the correct recipe, both interface functions, what happens to XP and curses, and when you should choose a grindstone instead of an anvil or crafting grid.

Minecraft Grindstone Recipe

The universally safe grindstone recipe uses the following materials:

• 2 sticks
• 2 wooden planks of any available wood type
• 1 stone slab

You need a crafting table because the pattern uses a three-by-three grid. To obtain the slab, smelt cobblestone into regular stone, place three stone blocks in a horizontal row and collect the resulting slabs.

Where to Find a Grindstone Naturally

Grindstones generate naturally at village weaponsmith locations. If you find one before crafting your own, mine it with a pickaxe so the block drops for collection. Breaking it without the appropriate tool can destroy it without giving you the item.

Before removing a village grindstone, check whether a weaponsmith has claimed it. Taking the block may prevent that villager from restocking trades until another reachable grindstone is available. If you have already traded with the villager, removing the workstation does not erase its profession, but it can still interrupt normal work and restocking behavior.

How to Use a Grindstone to Disenchant Items

1. Place the grindstone and interact with it to open the interface.
2. Put one enchanted item into either input slot.
3. Review the item shown in the result slot.
4. Take the result only if you are willing to lose its removable enchantments.

The grindstone removes all normal enchantments at once. You cannot select only one enchantment, transfer an enchantment into a book or recover the original enchanted book. Sharpness, Efficiency, Protection, Unbreaking, Fortune, Silk Touch and Mending are all removable enchantments and will be destroyed.

After you take the output, experience orbs appear. The refund is calculated from the enchantments removed; it is not a guaranteed return of every level originally spent at an enchanting table or anvil. The grindstone is therefore useful for recycling unwanted enchanted loot, but it is not an XP duplication system.

How Grindstones Handle Curses

No. Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing remain on the result. If an item has both beneficial enchantments and a curse, the grindstone removes the beneficial enchantments while leaving the curse behind. Curses also do not contribute to the XP refund.

Always inspect the result before removing it. The interface is your final warning that a valuable enchantment is about to disappear.

How to Repair Items With a Grindstone

1. Open the grindstone.
2. Place two damaged items of exactly the same type in the two input slots.
3. Check the durability and enchantments displayed on the result.
4. Move the repaired item into your inventory.

The output receives the remaining durability of both inputs plus a bonus equal to five percent of that item type’s maximum durability, capped at full durability. Two damaged iron swords can therefore become one stronger iron sword, but an iron sword and a diamond sword cannot be combined.

Both input items are consumed. Ordinary enchantments are stripped during the repair, and any curses that were present remain. This makes the grindstone a sensible choice for plain equipment, duplicate loot with poor enchantments or gear you intentionally want to reset. It is usually the wrong choice for a carefully built enchanted tool.

Grindstone vs Anvil vs Crafting Grid

Use an anvil when the enchantments matter. Anvils can repair with a matching item or suitable material, combine compatible enchantments, apply enchanted books and rename items, but the operation costs experience levels. Use a grindstone when removing enchantments is the goal or an acceptable trade-off.

How Grindstones Create Weaponsmith Villagers

A grindstone is the weaponsmith job-site block. An adult unemployed villager can claim an available, reachable grindstone and become a weaponsmith. Weaponsmith trades focus on weapons and related resources, with the exact offers depending on edition, villager level and trade selection.

Several conditions can prevent the profession change:

• The grindstone has already been claimed by another villager.
• The villager cannot reach or recognize the workstation.
• The villager is a nitwit or a child and cannot take a profession.
• You already traded with that villager, permanently locking its profession and offers.
• You are attempting the change outside the villager’s normal work schedule.

If you want to test a new weaponsmith’s starting offers, inspect them before completing the first trade. Once any trade is made, breaking and replacing the grindstone will not reroll that villager into a different profession.

Common Grindstone Problems

• No crafting output: confirm that the center ingredient is a valid stone slab and that the five materials use the exact pattern.
• No repair result: both input items must be the same item type; different materials or equipment categories cannot be merged.
• An enchantment remains: it is probably Curse of Binding or Curse of Vanishing, which grindstones do not remove.
• Less XP than expected: the block refunds only part of the enchantments’ calculated value, not the full original investment.
• Villager ignores the block: check profession status, trade lock, ownership, pathfinding and time of day.
• Bedrock grindstone breaks after placement: attach it to a valid supporting surface rather than leaving it unsupported.
