How to Switch Characters in GTA 5: PC, PS5 and Xbox Guide

Character switching is one of Grand Theft Auto V's defining systems. Instead of following a single protagonist from beginning to end, Story Mode lets you move between Michael, Franklin and Trevor as their lives and missions intersect. The game may cut between them automatically during scripted sequences, but outside restricted moments you can choose the perspective yourself.

This guide covers the current default controls on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, explains the difference between Story Mode switching and GTA Online character management, and provides practical fixes when the character wheel is unavailable.

GTA 5 Character-Switching Controls

These are the default mappings. If a key or controller button does not work, check the control settings because PC keys can be reassigned and custom controller layouts can alter the expected input.

How to Switch Characters on PlayStation and Xbox

1. Enter Story Mode and wait until you have normal control of the current protagonist.
2. Press and continue holding D-Pad Down.
3. Keep the button held while the game slows and displays the character wheel.
4. Move the right analog stick toward Michael, Franklin or Trevor.
5. Release D-Pad Down while the intended character remains highlighted.

The camera pulls away from the current location, travels across the map and drops into the selected character's scene. Each protagonist continues living between switches, so the arrival animation may place you in an activity rather than exactly where you last left them.

Tapping D-Pad Down rather than holding it can show radar or multiplayer information instead of keeping the selector open. Hold the button until you have moved the right stick to the desired portrait.

How to Switch Characters on PC

With the default keyboard and mouse layout, hold Left Alt, move the mouse toward the desired protagonist and release Alt. The selection works like the console wheel, but PC also includes default shortcut keys:

• F5: switch to Michael.
• F6: switch to Franklin.
• F7: switch to Trevor.
• F8: switch toward GTA Online.

Rockstar documented F5–F8 as the default direct character shortcuts for the PC release. A laptop may assign media or brightness functions to the same row, requiring the Fn modifier or a keyboard-setting change. The wheel is often easier if the function keys are intercepted by the operating system.

If you play on PC with a controller, use the same D-Pad Down and right-stick method as on console. Confirm whether Steam Input, controller software or a custom layout has changed the mapping before treating the issue as a game bug.

When Does Character Switching Become Available?

The full three-character system opens gradually as the story introduces each protagonist. A portrait may be absent or unavailable before that character has joined the active narrative. Trevor, for example, becomes selectable later than Michael and Franklin. Continue the marked Story missions if the wheel does not yet show all three.

Mission structure also controls availability. Some missions require one protagonist and deliberately lock manual switching. Other missions expect tactical switching and display a prompt when another character is in position. During these sequences, follow the on-screen instruction: choosing the correct perspective can provide a new angle, vehicle or combat role.

Why Switch Between Michael, Franklin and Trevor?

Switching changes more than the person on screen. Each protagonist has different personal missions, properties, contacts and activities. Their special abilities also favor different situations:

• Michael can slow time during gunfights, helping with precise shooting.
• Franklin can slow time while driving, making tight corners and traffic easier to control.
• Trevor can enter a rage-like state that increases his damage while reducing damage taken.

During free exploration, switching can also save travel time when another protagonist is already near the activity you want. During multi-character missions, it becomes a tactical system: one character may provide cover while another advances or handles a vehicle.

How to Switch GTA Online Characters

GTA Online avatars are not managed in the same way as Story Mode protagonists. Rockstar currently allows two GTA Online character slots. To move between those avatars, use the relevant Pause Menu option for your edition.

Enhanced editions

On PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and GTA V Enhanced for PC:

1. Open the Pause Menu.
2. Select or highlight Online.
3. Choose Manage Characters.
4. Select the Online character you want to use and follow the confirmation prompt.

Legacy editions

On PlayStation 4, Xbox One and GTA V Legacy for PC, follow the same path but select Online > Swap Characters. Rockstar's current support documentation uses “Manage Characters” for Enhanced and “Swap Characters” for Legacy, so older guides may show a different menu name from the one on your screen.

Do not confuse selecting an avatar with deleting one. The management screen can include a permanent deletion option. Read the bottom-of-screen prompts carefully and never confirm “delete” when your intention is only to switch.

Story Mode and GTA Online Are Different

• The story has not unlocked the character: complete the available main missions and check again.
• The mission blocks manual switching: wait until the current objective or scripted sequence ends.
• You are in a cutscene, menu or transition: return to normal gameplay before opening the wheel.
• The wrong input is being used: hold rather than tap D-Pad Down or Left Alt.
• A key was remapped: inspect the keyboard, mouse or controller settings.
• PC function keys control the laptop: use Fn with F5–F8 or use the Alt wheel instead.
• You are trying to swap Online avatars through the Story wheel: use the Online menu path for your edition.

If switching should be available but the wheel still fails, create a manual Story Mode save, restart the game and reload that save. PC players can also verify game files through their launcher. For persistent Online problems, check Rockstar's service status before repeatedly changing sessions.
