Find Ancient Debris at Minecraft’s best Netherite level, compare safe mining methods and learn the current smithing-template upgrade recipe.
09.09.2026Short answer: The best place to find Netherite materials is around Y level 15 in the Nether. Mine hidden Ancient Debris with a diamond or netherite pickaxe, then smelt it into Netherite Scrap. Four scraps plus four gold ingots make one Netherite Ingot. To upgrade one diamond item in current Minecraft versions, you also need a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template from a Bastion Remnant and a smithing table.
Netherite is not an ore you simply mine and turn into a pickaxe. The useful material begins as Ancient Debris, a rare block buried inside the Nether. Finding it is only the first part of the process: you must smelt the debris, add gold, recover an upgrade template and apply everything to existing diamond equipment.
This guide covers the current Java and Bedrock upgrade path and corrects older tutorials that predate smithing templates. Minecraft mechanics and linked Epinpay listings were checked on September 9, 2026. If you play on a server, confirm its version and rules before using explosions.
| Material | Where or how to get it | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient Debris | Hidden in the Nether; Y=15 is the best average level | Smelt into scrap |
| Netherite Scrap | Smelt Ancient Debris in a furnace or blast furnace | Four are needed per ingot |
| Netherite Ingot | Craft four scraps with four gold ingots | One upgrades one diamond item |
| Upgrade Template | Bastion Remnant chests; two are guaranteed in a treasure-room bastion | Consumed during each upgrade |
| Smithing Table | Craft with two iron ingots and four planks | Combines template, diamond item and ingot |
Y=15 offers the highest average chance of finding Ancient Debris. Mojang explains that Ancient Debris can generate in up to two groups per chunk: one between Y levels 8 and 22 and another, less concentrated opportunity between Y levels 8 and 119. It never generates exposed to air, so scanning caves is far less effective than opening fresh rock.
Levels 11, 12 and 15 are all practical for explosive mining, but Y=15 is the clearest starting point. Use the coordinate display to hold a consistent height and dig horizontally through netherrack. Biome choice is less important than depth and the amount of untouched terrain you expose.
Only a diamond or netherite pickaxe can collect Ancient Debris. An iron pickaxe breaks the block without dropping it. Consider adding Efficiency and Unbreaking to reduce the time and tool wear, but remember that netherrack disappears much faster than Ancient Debris; avoid mining carelessly into lava.
Ancient Debris itself resists explosions and does not burn in lava, but the player and surrounding terrain certainly can. Carrying valuable diamond equipment does not make an unsafe tunnel safe.
Branch mining is the most controlled approach. Travel to Y=15, create a protected main tunnel and open parallel side tunnels with space between them. Because Ancient Debris is hidden, the goal is to expose as many new block faces as possible without repeatedly mining the same area.
This method needs no explosives and causes less server damage. Its disadvantage is speed: netherrack mining is easy, but each narrow tunnel reveals fewer blocks than a blast.
Beds explode when someone tries to sleep in the Nether. Since Ancient Debris is highly blast resistant, players can use that explosion to clear large pockets of weaker netherrack. Beds are inexpensive, making this a popular early-game method after obtaining diamond equipment.
At Y=15, dig a narrow side tunnel, place a bed at its far end and interact with it from behind a solid block. Keep your body away from the direct blast line, restore health between detonations and inspect the cavity for debris and lava before walking forward. Mojang’s own guide recommends full health, plenty of food and diamond armor.
This technique is dangerous. Fire can fill the cavity, hidden lava can pour into the opening and repeated explosions can kill an unprepared player. Never test it beside your portal, a shared base or another player’s construction.
TNT provides more control because you can place several charges, retreat and ignite from a safer position. A sequence of explosions reveals a broad corridor while leaving Ancient Debris intact. It is often the fastest comfortable method for a developed world with reliable gunpowder and sand supplies.
Space charges so their blast areas overlap without wasting TNT, protect the route back and wait for lava to settle before collecting anything. The resource cost is the trade-off: branch mining preserves materials, while TNT converts established farms and supplies into faster searching.
Mining enough debris no longer completes the upgrade. Current Minecraft versions require a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template from a Bastion Remnant. Templates may appear in bastion chests, while treasure-room bastions guarantee two. They are consumed when used.
Bastions are hazardous. Ordinary piglins are less immediately hostile when you wear a piece of gold armor, but opening containers can anger them. Piglin Brutes attack on sight regardless of clothing. Bring strong equipment, blocks for controlling movement and a clear escape route; do not treat a treasure room as a casual stop.
Once you own one template, duplicate it in a crafting table using seven diamonds, one netherrack and the original template. The recipe returns two templates, so keep one as a master copy instead of consuming your last one. Duplication is diamond-intensive, but it is safer than repeatedly searching unfamiliar bastions.
| Upgrade goal | Netherite Ingots | Ancient Debris | Templates consumed |
|---|---|---|---|
| One item | 1 | 4 | 1 |
| Full armor set | 4 | 16 | 4 |
| Armor, sword and pickaxe | 6 | 24 | 6 |

Y level 15 provides the highest average chance of finding Ancient Debris. Dig through fresh netherrack rather than searching open caves because the block does not generate exposed to air.
Ancient Debris spawns hidden inside the Nether. One concentrated generation range is between Y levels 8 and 22, with another possible group between Y levels 8 and 119.
No. You need a diamond or netherite pickaxe to collect Ancient Debris. Breaking it with an iron pickaxe does not drop the block.
You need four Ancient Debris. Smelt them into four Netherite Scraps, then combine those scraps with four gold ingots to craft one Netherite Ingot.
Yes. Current versions require one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, one diamond item and one Netherite Ingot for each upgrade. The template is consumed.
No. Minecoins buy eligible content in the Minecraft Marketplace on compatible Bedrock platforms. They cannot purchase Ancient Debris or Netherite in a Survival world.
