GTA 5 Legacy remains useful for older PCs and for playing with friends who have not upgraded. The crucial limitation is that Legacy and Enhanced use separate GTA Online player pools, and progress stops syncing after migration.
Grand Theft Auto V now has two PC editions, and the names can make a simple install decision feel more complicated than it is. Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced for PC on March 4, 2025, while keeping the previous PC build available as Grand Theft Auto V Legacy. Existing PC owners received access to the Enhanced upgrade at no extra charge, and current PC purchases include both editions.

It also corrects a few common misconceptions: Enhanced does not automatically make every PC faster, it does not share GTA Online sessions with Legacy, and moving a save does not create permanently synchronized progress.

Enhanced introduces ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination, which Rockstar identified as PC-exclusive additions at launch, alongside ray-traced shadows and reflections. In practical terms, compatible hardware can produce more convincing indirect light, contact shading and reflective surfaces. The difference is easiest to notice around wet roads, glass, vehicle bodywork and scenes with strong light contrast.
The edition also supports NVIDIA DLSS 3 and AMD FSR 1 and FSR 3. These technologies can help balance image quality and performance, but results depend on your GPU, resolution, selected quality mode and frame-generation support. Ray tracing is demanding; an “Enhanced” label is not a guarantee that every setting should be pushed to maximum.
Rockstar requires an SSD for Enhanced and supports DirectStorage on compatible systems. The result is designed around faster loading than the HDD-era Legacy specification. Enhanced also supports higher resolutions, wider aspect ratios and higher frame rates where the hardware and display allow them.
Audio upgrades include Dolby Atmos support and improved fidelity for speech, cinematics and music. DualSense controllers can use adaptive triggers when supported. These are meaningful refinements, though they are not reasons to upgrade if your storage, GPU or processor falls below the minimum specification.
The most important differences are not limited to graphics. GTA Online Enhanced brings PC access to features that were introduced for newer-generation consoles. Hao's Special Works offers selected vehicles and performance upgrades, while animal encounters add wildlife to the online world. Career Progress organizes challenges and rewards across criminal activities, and Career Builder gives eligible new players a structured start with an allocation of GTA$4,000,000 to spend across a chosen career, property, vehicles and equipment under the mode's rules.
GTA+ membership is supported on the Enhanced PC version in eligible territories, not on Legacy. Membership content and availability can change, so check Rockstar's current GTA+ page before subscribing. Enhanced also launched with additional protections including kernel-based anti-cheat and proactive voice-chat moderation.
These additions do not mean that Legacy loses its existing core missions, businesses or open-world structure. Legacy remains playable, but it does not receive the Enhanced-only systems listed above.
No. GTA Online does not support cross-version play between Legacy and Enhanced on PC. Each edition has its own online population. If you upgrade while your regular crew stays on Legacy, you must launch Legacy to join them. Likewise, a player running Enhanced cannot enter a Legacy session from inside the newer edition.
This is the first question a multiplayer group should answer before migrating. Both versions may remain in your PC library, but keeping both installed uses substantial storage. Agree on one edition for group sessions before anyone assumes the upgrade will preserve the same matchmaking access.
Rockstar's current requirements show why Legacy still exists. Enhanced needs at least Windows 10 build 1909, an Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590, 8GB RAM, a GTX 1630 4GB or RX 6400 4GB, and 105GB on an SSD. The recommended target rises to Windows 11, a Core i5-9600K or Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB dual-channel RAM, an RTX 3060 8GB or RX 6600 XT 8GB, and a 105GB DirectStorage-compatible drive.
Legacy has much lower minimums: a Core 2 Quad Q6600 or Phenom 9850, 4GB RAM, a 9800 GT 1GB or HD 4870 1GB, and 125GB on an HDD. Its recommended specification is also far lighter than Enhanced. These are baseline requirements rather than promises of a particular resolution or frame rate, and Rockstar notes that requirements can change as downloadable content and programming evolve.
Practical check: If your system only narrowly meets the Enhanced minimum, install it on the SSD, update your graphics driver and begin with conservative ray-tracing settings. If stability or frame pacing is poor, Legacy may deliver the better experience despite its older feature set.
In Enhanced, choose the migration option from the GTA Online landing page. If you have already entered Online in Enhanced, use Pause Menu > Online > Migrate Profile. Eligible PC profiles can carry characters, progression and owned content into Enhanced. Migration is PC-to-PC only; Rockstar does not support transferring a PC profile to console or a console profile to PC through this process.
Your Legacy profile remains after migration, but it becomes a separate branch. Progress earned later in Legacy will not appear in Enhanced, and progress earned in Enhanced will not update Legacy. Suspended, banned, illegitimate or insufficiently progressed profiles may be ineligible. During processing, Online access can be temporarily unavailable in both versions.
Open Legacy, then select Pause Menu > Game > Upload Save Game. Launch Enhanced and download the save from its landing page or from Pause Menu > Game > Download Save Game. You can upload one save per Rockstar account and replace it until it is downloaded into Enhanced. After a successful download, that account cannot perform another Story Mode migration.
The uploaded Story Mode save remains available for 90 days. As with Online, future progress is not synchronized, so choose the save carefully and make a local backup before starting.
Choose GTA 5 Enhanced if your PC comfortably meets the requirements, you want the best official visual feature set, your friends use Enhanced, or you want HSW, Career Progress, animal encounters and GTA+ access. For most players on a recent gaming PC, it is the sensible default.
Choose GTA 5 Legacy if your hardware is below the Enhanced target, your multiplayer group remains on Legacy, or you rely on a carefully configured setup that has not been validated with Enhanced. Mod compatibility changes over time and depends on third-party developers, so verify every mod independently before moving files or launching Online. Never use unauthorized modifications in GTA Online.
If you are undecided, test Enhanced before migrating your main Online profile. Benchmark the areas you actually play, confirm that your crew is on the same edition, and only then make the migration decision. Because the two profiles stop syncing, treating migration as a deliberate fork avoids unpleasant surprises.
GTA 5 Enhanced is more than a graphics preset. It modernizes the PC renderer and storage pipeline while adding a distinct GTA Online feature set. Legacy's advantage is accessibility: it supports much older hardware and preserves access to the Legacy online population.
